What information is needed to sell boxed cigars?

The details a buyer needs before they can review boxed cigars: brand, vitola, quantity, box codes, condition, storage and location.

Boxed cigars are the easiest kind of cigar inventory to sell, because the box itself carries most of the information a buyer needs. Here’s what to have ready.

For each box

  • Brand and vitola. For example, Cohiba Siglo VI or Montecristo No. 2.
  • Box size. How many cigars the box holds when full, often 10, 25 or 50.
  • Sealed or opened. If opened, how many cigars are left.
  • Box codes. The factory code and date stamped on the bottom of the box.
  • Seals and labels. Whether the warranty seal and any other seals or labels are present and intact.

For the collection as a whole

  • Storage history: where the cigars have been kept, how and for how long.
  • Condition: any damage to boxes, mould, dryness or signs of tobacco beetles.
  • Location: where the cigars are now.
  • Provenance: where they were bought, if you know, and any receipts.
  • Ownership: who owns them, and who has the authority to sell.

Photos

Photos answer most of a buyer’s questions at once. The most useful are the box fronts, the box bottoms with their codes, and one or two opened boxes showing the cigars. See how to photograph cigar boxes.

If you don’t know some of this

That’s fine. A buyer who knows Habanos can identify most boxes from clear photos. Send what you have and say what you’re unsure about.
